Responsible Use of Electronic Resources

It is the policy of the University of Texas System and its institutions to follow the United State Copyright Law of 1976, as amended.  Refer to the UT System Policy 107, Use of Copyrighted Materials (see link below). 

UT Southwestern Medical Center Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center provides institutional online access to quality health and medical electronic resources (i.e., electronic books, electronic journals, databases). Electronic resource use is governed by institutional license agreements with terms of use and is restricted to authorized users at UT Southwestern (faculty, residents, fellows, staff, students).  Refer to the UT System Policy 107 Use of Copyrighted Materials (see link below). 

Publishers monitor use of their electronic resources, especially at the institutional level. Abuse of license terms of use may result in termination of individual privileges or termination of campus-wide access to particular resources.

Institutional license agreements generally permit the following uses for educational, personal, or research use only:

1. Print limited amounts of data
2. Download limited amounts of data
3. Email search results or articles to self or another authorized user
4. Re-use of limited amounts of content in electronic or print coursepacks

Institutional license agreements generally prohibit the following uses:

1. Print or download large amounts of data or an entire ebook or ejournal issue
2. Retransmission of data to non-authorized users
3. Commercial use of any kind
4. Preparation of a derivative work or incorporation into any other work or system
5. Sharing of individual passwords
