University Archives

The UT Southwestern University Archives is responsible for collecting, processing, preserving, and providing access to the records documenting the administrative, intellectual, and social life of UT Southwestern Medical Center. The archives documents the following:

  1. The mandated functions of UT Southwestern Medical Center and the University Hospitals. Such as education, research, and healthcare delivery.
  2. The governance and administration of UT Southwestern Medical Center.
  3. The lives of faculty, staff, students, and alumni of UT Southwestern Medical Center.
  4. The relationship of UT Southwestern Medical Center with affiliated hospitals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

What is an Archival Record?

Per the Texas Woman's University's "Records Management" page, "An original university record that has permanent or historic value, is inactive, and is not required to be retained in the office in which it was received. Archival records are retained and preserved indefinitely..." in the University Archives at UT Southwestern Medical Center. 

What We Collect

The UT Southwestern Archives collects records, photographs, audiovisual material, publications, and other historical materials documenting the administrative, intellectual, and social life of UT Southwestern Medical Center. The following is a partial list of the types of records that the archives collects:

  • Records documenting the functions and activities of administrative offices, departments, and centers (i.e. correspondence, meeting minutes, annual reports, etc.); the offices of highest priority are those of the President, the Deans of the individual schools, the Vice-Presidents, etc.
  • Records of standing committees (i.e. meeting agendas, meeting minutes, administrative correspondence, etc.)
  • Records documenting students' campus and/or academic life
  • Donated papers of faculty, which could include:
    • Professional correspondence and/or memos
    • University correspondence and/or memos
    • Lecture notes, lecture slides, or syllabi
    • CV/Resume
    • Records documenting research activities. Such as correspondence, research/ subject files, lab notebooks, etc.
  • UT Southwestern produced publications (i.e. Center Times, departmental newsletters)
  • Printed materials including brochures, flyers, booklets, pamphlets, postcards, etc.
  • Yearbooks
  • Dissertations and theses
