Accuracy, comprehensiveness, and transparent reporting are essential since ES/SRs are used to make healthcare decisions. Adhering to reporting guidelines furthers this goal. The major reporting guideline for ES/SR and meta-analyses is Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, or PRISMA (Eden, 2011).
Chapter 5 - Standards for Reporting Systematic Reviews of Finding What Works in Health Care: Standards for Systematic Reviews details three related standards for documenting the SR process, responding to input from peer reviewers and other users and stakeholders, and making the final report publicly available (Eden, 2011). While the standards are based on the PRISMA checklist, the IOM committee recommended several reporting items in addition to the PRISMA requirements to ensure that the final report:
