ORCID Guide

What is ORCID?

What is ORCID? from ORCID on Vimeo (4:17).

ORCID provides a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID identifiers – also known as ORCID iDs – are persistent unique identifiers that follow individuals throughout their careers. The format of an ORCID iD looks something like "0000-0003-0423-208X". You can easily and uniquely attach your ORCID iD to your scholarly works, such as articles, citations, grants, patents, and data sets.

Benefits of getting an ORCID iD include:

  • Ensuring you get credit for your scholarly work
  • Reducing the administrative burden of having to identify your work to multiple systems and organizations
  • Repurposing information for campus repositories

ORCID Visibility Settings

ORCID has three visibility settings that you can apply to any of your record's entries. They are:

  • Everyone – Information is publicly available to everyone online including UT Southwestern.
  • Trusted Parties ;– Not available to the general public, but access is provided to UT Southwestern and any other organization you designate in your ORCID record's "Trusted Parties" area.
  • Only Me – Personal use only and not publicly available to anyone.
